How Missouri Star Quilt Co. stitched their way to a 14% higher LTV
An 18-month follow-up. New data — audited by MSQC’s agency, not by Reactiv — on what an overnight app rebuild actually delivered.
A 9-figure brand. A million quilters. No app worth opening.
Al Doan founded Missouri Star Quilt Company in 2008, building it around his mom’s dream. What started as a family passion project is now a 9-figure quilting brand with hundreds of employees and several retail stores.
Today MSQC reaches millions of quilters across their social channels — over 1 million on YouTube alone.
MSQC’s customers were ready for an app. The website couldn’t deliver the focused, personal experience a loyal community deserves.
MSQC launched on Reactiv. The numbers landed fast: 50,000 users in the first two weeks. About 10% of total company revenue. No push notifications. No promotion. Customers found the app on their own.
It wasn’t always this clean.
A 200,000-user app that went dark overnight.
This wasn’t MSQC’s first attempt at launching a mobile app. Their previous provider pulled up to 200,000 daily users — then failed. No app, no support, hundreds of thousands of customers left without an answer.
We ended up needing immediate midnight support because our app went down overnight.
Reactiv stepped in within hours. In less than 24 hours, the team kept MSQC’s app presence in the App Store by wrapping the existing site with a temporary build, then committed to shipping a replacement quickly.
A complete reset. Three priorities. No template.
Fewer options. Sharper journeys. The opposite of the website.
Start with the basics. The old app didn’t have a back button. With 25,000+ SKUs, that’s not a small problem.
Downloading an app is a customer telling you they want a closer relationship. Losing the app is the opposite signal.
Customers found the app on their own. No push notifications. No promotion.
Build vs. buy.
Total flexibility. Permanent overhead.
- —Dedicated team: Android + iOS + PM
- —7–8 months minimum before customers see it
- —Maintenance constrained by internal capacity
- —iOS changes to chase, codebases to keep alive
One partner. One job. Every day.
- +Reactiv handles connection, integration, platform updates
- +Customizable — not a template
- +Ship in weeks, not quarters
- +Speed of progress isn’t bottlenecked by an internal roadmap
We can build a custom experience that makes our customers’ lives way better. But still, I’m not in the app business. I get to fix the problems and not hire three devs to stare at apps all day.
Why not a drag-and-drop editor?
The simplest path would’ve been a no-code builder. The trade-off: dragging your store into a rigid template and dropping your brand identity at the door. For a brand whose customers download the app because they trust MSQC specifically, a templated experience is a misstep on day one.
Daily Deals
A deeply discounted item every day, built around impulse purchase behaviour.
Watch tab
Shoppable video tutorials connected to the products and patterns they teach.
App Clips
A full marketing and advertising flow built around frictionless, no-download access.
Frequency. Loyalty. Two levers.
How often customers come back.
MSQC’s “Bundle” feature lets customers hold an order for seven days, adding items as they go to qualify for free shipping and consolidate shipments. Paired with the Daily Deal, the result is a shopping flow built around quick, repeat purchases.
How much they trust you when they’re there.
A customer who downloads your app is a logged-in customer — and a logged-in customer is one you can actually personalise for. MSQC uses push notifications for moments worth interrupting for: early access drops, exclusive deals, restock alerts.
Features that close the trust gap.
Trust was the harder fix. The original app’s overnight collapse left a mark. The Reactiv build introduced features the old app couldn’t:
Free patterns and ebooks delivered in-app.
Saved across tutorials, products, and collections.
Saved content syncs across devices. No more lost wishlists.
Linked to the products and patterns they teach.
Sent based on real user behaviour and product availability.
The most-cited customer reaction: relief.
Internally, the relaunch made life easier for the MSQC team. Externally, the response was about the smallest details.
The most-cited customer reaction: relief at finally having a back button. For a brand whose customers browse 25,000 SKUs to find one specific fabric, that isn’t a small fix — it’s the difference between an app that works and an app that doesn’t.
Small fixes. Big trust signal.
An independent agency audited 130,000+ customers. Reactiv was the highest-stickiness channel in MSQC’s portfolio.
The agency that owns MSQC’s measurement stack ran the numbers.
The recommendation: invest harder in the Reactiv flywheel.
More custom pages. More personalisation. More reasons to open the app first.
MSQC is shipping more custom pages, more personalisation, more reasons for loyal customers to open the app first. The audit gave them the case for what comes next — and the data to keep doubling down.
Reactiv builds custom mobile apps without the dev team.
Built to lift LTV. Built to keep your customers in the app.
